Lost Memories is a poignant and deeply personal exhibition by filmmaker and screenwriter Gary Thomas, exploring the emotional journey of caring for a loved one with dementia. Drawing from his own experience of looking after his mother, who had Alzheimer’s Disease, Thomas captures both the heart-wrenching and joyful moments that defined their relationship.
This immersive installation features intimate diary entries and real-life phone call recordings, offering a raw and honest portrayal of caregiving. Through a blend of documentary footage and fictional sequences, Lost Memories invites audiences to witness the challenges and moments of clarity experienced by carers. The work not only highlights the confusion and emotional toll of dementia but also celebrates the moments of love and connection that remain.
Thomas’s installation serves as a tribute to the countless individuals caring for relatives, providing recognition and a space for reflection. Lost Memories stands as a powerful narrative of caregiving, offering a window into the resilience, tenderness, and complexities of this vital role.
Lighthouse and Figment Arts present Lost Memories as part of Dreamy Place with support from Arts Council England.
