Films in the programme:

Emily Sasmore, FLORE, 2022
Flore is a one act opera about a telephonic declaration of love during an endless night. Maybe things won’t get better, but if Flore and her partner are by each other’s sides they’ll be alright.

Junjie (Dinggo) Xu, BLOOM, 2022
BLOOM is a 3D animated short that draws from real queer experiences, focusing on love and identity within the queer community. Using the metaphor of plants blooming, it reflects on the process of self-discovery and expression, while navigating the pressures of modern society. The film looks at past experiences and perceptions of love, illustrating how the LGBTQ+ community continues to thrive despite the challenges they face.

Sophie Ansell, Trickle-down Economics, 2022
Trickle-down Economics is a film about spit, tears and austerity. It’s also a salacious piece of gossip I’m just dying to share with you.
It’s important for me to pass this story on because it delves into the complexities of power dynamics in queer BDSM relationships in a way that was cathartic for me to make and, I hope, will be for others to watch. It is a personal and humorous exploration of the ways in which late-stage capitalism has encroached on and commodified desire. I find examples of this in dating-app use, descriptions of “primary” and “secondary’” partners and in the use of managerial speak to organise our relationships.
Ultimately I am fascinated with the clash of messy emotions and the hyper-rational language with which we try to police them.

Lucy Rose Shaftain-Fenner, A Tight, Warm Hug, 2024
I’m safe, I’m loved and I’m Lucy.
Lucy Rose, a transgender woman, shares her journey of self-love and empowerment since starting hormone replacement therapy three years ago. The film is part animation, part documentary and part VHS archive footage.

Theo Bolante, Lip Sync For Your (Real?) Life – 9 to 5, 2024
This short film is part of a series of seven songs, compiled for a karaoke installation project. The concept behind this installation is to encourage togetherness and laughter, dancing to songs that celebrate love—both self-love and love for others. This project is an extension of my personal journey, as a closeted queer now embracing and expressing my authenticity freely, to my family and friends.
Inspired by the artform of lip-syncing, the audience is invited to participate and reflect on the lyrics of the song. This karaoke cover of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” reflects my frustration toward the value we place on material wealth and our dependence to money as means for our survival. Despite our society being shaped by inequality and capitalism, this song serves as a reminder to continue pursuing our dreams and personal aspirations as acts of resistance.
